I just need to replace my tub faucet with one that has a detachable hose on it. I may invest in the faucet but have no idea what a plumber would charge to replace it. Any ideas?
Plumbers are very expensive. I’ve heard in SW Georgia (rural areas) it might cost $90 just to get a plumber to show up.
On the flip side, any job like that needs to be done by someone who knows what they’re doing, and paying for it now is cheaper than replacing water damaged walls or floors and paying again later.
If you use a plumber who’s licensed and insured, if it’s not done right you have some recourse.
To find out prices in your area, just pick up the phone and ask for free estimates. They may come out and see the job or just give you some idea over the phone.
Beware of “extras” added on to their estimate. My husband does floor covering installation and often a plumber will come in to reset the toilet after we’ve installed ceramic tile on the floor.
He may tell the homeowner that the flange or some other parts were damaged by the tile setter, so he’s charging extra.
When that happens, my husband goes back to the house and confronts the plumber, asking to be shown what was damaged and where it is. They back down and reduce the bill again when they can’t produce a reason for the new pieces. I’m not saying all plumbers would do this. Just be aware some people are not honest.
If you have a landlord or knowledgeable person to be present when he’s doing the work, it might discourage any inflating the price.
Also, be aware that in some areas if you hire a general handyman (not a licensed plumber) to do the work, it could be illegal. You could get the handyman in trouble by mentioning it. I don’t think you would be in trouble though.
Good luck.
